OK Ukulele Group is online lessons for 2 groups of children and young people with disabilities and their siblings, to learn to play the ukulele. Lessons are run by Tara Maysey, an experienced teacher from the London Ukulele Project. They started during lockdown in 2020 and were a vital lifeline for isolated children and have continued to be a source of joy and friendships.
Children with disabilities are often excluded from mainstream music activities, despite music being one of the few things many respond to. Learning ukulele is accessible for children with moderate to severe communication difficulties. The lessons are adapted to meet all needs, with lyrics and music posted online and a video made each week to help children practice.
The groups come together to perform in our 2 annual public concerts, along with our OK Music School and OK Youth Choir, which brings them pride, self-esteem, and a sense of achievement, as they participate in the community. 6 pupils are now ready to take Grade 1 ukulele exam and an ensemble performance exam.
