OK MUSIC GROUP WITH MENCAP
OK Music Group is part of a Music and More morning run in partnership with Richmond Mencap for adults with learning disabilities. A one hour music therapy group led by Margaret (Moggs) Nicholson, supported by Mencap staff.
Activities include giving a chance to express feelings through music, speaking or Makaton signing. Using a different theme each week, participants do warm-up exercises, play percussion, work in groups to create short pieces of music inspired by pictures connected to the theme and sing or play along with songs connected to the theme. Technology such as iPads and the GarageBand app are now being used to experiment with different instruments and rhythms.
The group provides a safe environment where participants can share their emotions and express themselves through music and form bonds with others Some show leadership qualities, and all are showing concern for each other, welcoming new members and creating a supportive space. Their confidence is increased as they become more able to perform with or in front of others, all supporting their mental wellbeing and feelings of inclusion.
Feedback from participants shows a very positive response to the sessions:
- 100% chose the Happy smiley to describe how the groups made them feel
- 80% said they made them feel relaxed and that they had friends
- 70% said they felt proud and could do something they couldn’t do before
They told us:
“I love everything about the group – it really makes me happy to see everyone, my friends, and to make music together”.
“I enjoy the group members as they make me laugh and I always feel relaxed afterwards”.
“I love making different sounds and imagining other worlds during the theme of the week”.
“We really look forward to coming. We love getting to know each other and know we can take part in activities and make suggestions”.
